St. Mary Magdalene Girls’ Basketball 2005-2006

Girls’ basketball at St. Mary Magdalene is designed for the girls to grow as basketball players, to challenge them to help them realize what they can accomplish, to build friendships, and to have fun.
Basketball will be open to 5th-8th graders this year. There will be two separate teams this year. The varsity will consist of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. The JV will consist of 5th and 6th graders. The league rules for JV allow for 7th graders on the team, but I do not want to have any if at all possible because of the purpose of the JV program (see below).
The varsity team is a competitive team. The varsity team will consist of 7th and 8th graders and 6th graders ready to play at that level. On varsity, there is more emphasis on winning than there is on JV. The varsity will have more practice time because of the more competitive nature of the team. Playing time will mostly be based on ability to help the team succeed. The varsity team will consist of somewhere between 10 and 15 players depending on how many players will be ready to contribute on varsity. Ideally the team will have about 12 players.
The JV team is to help the girls get ready to play on the varsity team when they get older. Therefore, the major focus of the JV team is to allow players to develop their basketball skills. The JV team will not have as much emphasis on winning as the varsity. Playing time will be more evenly distributed than on varsity. Every player will play in each game (unless being disciplined). A goal will still be to win games, but our win-loss record won’t be as important as how much we improved and the playing experience the girls will receive.
Both teams will have a lot of fun and will look to build off our tremendously successful season last year.
Please make sure to get an athletic permission form from the office. That form is required along with a physical within the last two years in order to play.
Our practice schedule will be different from the boys including when the 5th graders will be starting practices. Except for the first week, the girls will have at least one day off per week (no practice or games on that day).

Notes: The second column is who is practicing or has a game. On this schedule, it is sometimes listed by grade and sometimes by team. There may be some 6th graders practicing with the varsity on November 9-11. After November 14th, the players will be clearly assigned to teams and will not usually practice together.
Where it says “Soccer Field” we will be doing some conditioning on the soccer field or somewhere else if it is raining.
On Friday, November 18 the practice will be a scrimmage game against ourselves. Some JV players might be involved depending on the number of players on varsity.
Currently, the JV season ends on January 31. The varsity season goes through the Shamrock Tournament in Charlotte starting Friday, February 24. Complete game schedule is available on the STMM web site on the Sports page.
